ROOM L: Gauguin and Post-impressionism

Of the six works by Gauguin in the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, the two most important and admired are probably Allées y Venues, Martinique and Mata Mua (Once upon a time). The entire group offers a survey from the artist’s earliest years, through his search for primitive veracity which would take him to Pont Aven, Martinique, the Breton village of Le Pouldu and finally Haiti and the Marquesas Islands. Over the course of this journey Gauguin formulated the style that defined his work: the explosion of colour, vibrant textures, sense of composition and emphasis on pictorial values, arising from his contact with an ancestral nature that captivated him throughout his life. Following on from Gauguin’s achievements, this section of the collection displays paintings by Bernard, Denis and Vuillard and landscapes from the 1920s by Bonnard. Also on show are works by painters close to the Nabis movement such as Albert André, Louis Valtat and Georges D’Espagnat.



		A visit to the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza spans more than 700 years of the History of Art and features masterpieces of painting. The visitor itinerary begins on the second floor with the oldest paintings and ends on the ground floor with 20th-century works. Please, select the room you wish to visit.
